KUALA LUMPUR: At least one local player is assured of playing in the same tournament as former world No. 1 Tiger Woods.
The Sapura national qualifier will allow the winner to play in the CIMB Classic next moth.
The Sapura national qualifier, which will tee off at the Mines Resort and Golf Club on Monday, will allow the Malaysian pros to challenge each other and earn the right to play in the US$6.1mil CIMB Classic at the same venue next month.
The three-day national qualifier offers a total purse of RM150,000. The winner will pick up RM22,000 as well as get the chance to play in the CIMB Classic alongside Woods.
Sapura Group president and CEO Datuk Seri Shahril Shamsuddin expects the national qualifier to be an exciting affair as the local players will be vying for a coveted prize – a place in the CIMB Classic.
“The Sapura national qualifier offers a bigger stake for players this year as they will compete for the chance of a lifetime to play alongside Tiger Woods as well as previous winners Bo Van Pelt and Ben Crane,” he said.
In hosting the national qualifier, the Sapura Group also confirmed its position as a main sponsor of the CIMB Classic.
Local pro Shaaban Hussin, winner of the last two editions in 2010 and 2011, will be gunning for a third appearance.
The CIMB Classic, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, is the only PGA Tour-sanctioned event in the region.
Now in its third year, the tournament will feature 48 players – 30 from the PGA Tour, 10 from the Asian Tour and eight sonsor’s exempts. The players will compete for the US$6.1mil purse, with the winner taking home US$1.3mil.
