PETALING JAYA: Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi surged back to the top of the CP130 points chart by bagging his second win of the season in Round 4 of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships at Bandar Makhota, Banting, yesterday.
The Pachie Yuzy Honda Racing rider, who earned pole position earlier, sealed the win with a total time of 13:44.722 despite a broken thumb, setting the benchmark for the fastest lap of the race in 54.287.
Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing rookie Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali served up a surprise when he successfully held off veteran Ahmad Fuad Baharudin to claim his first CP130 career podium by coming in second (13:49.409).
Ahmad Fuad Baharudin (Faito Motobert Racing), who was the fastest during the Saturday practice sessions, was third.
“Winning here is really unexpected given that this track is very hard and my thumb has yet to heal fully. But I’m really grateful and thankful to Pachie Yuzy Honda Racing,” said the 17-year-old Zaqhwan.
Hauling 25 points from this leg, Zaqhwan now tops the CP130 overall standings with a total of 70 points followed by Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman (Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing) second and Fuad third with 60 and 54 points respectively.
Mohd Iskandar Raduan extended his lead in the CP115 title chase when he too claimed his second win of the season in the intermediate category.
The Petronas Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM rider played it cool by allowing Mohd Amirul Ariff Musa (Pachie Yuzy Honda Racing) to take the lead in the first half of the 12-lap race before muscling past Amirul at turn seven.
Despite Amirul’s best efforts to regain control of the race, Iskandar held firm, winning in 11:12.625.
Round 5 of the championships will take place in Teluk Intan from June 9-10.
