KANGAR: Noor Shahidatun Nadia Mohd Zuki is far from happy despite setting a new triple jump record at the National Schools Athletics Championships (MSSM) at Stadium Utama yesterday.

The Alor Setar lass rewrote Mary J. Nakarans nine-year-old record of 12.24m with a leap of 12.36m but it was way below her personal best of 12.99m, which she did at the FT All Comers meet in March.

The 16-year-old, who had planned to clear the 13m mark, also had four out of her six jumps disqualified.

“My performance was below par and this is the first time I had so many of my jumps disqualified,” said the bewildered Shahidatun.

“I’m not sure what went wrong today. My take-off didn’t work as planned and I’m very disappointed that I failed to better my personal best.”

However, it was not all despair for the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student as her performance in the FT All Comers helped her qualify for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona from July 10-15 and the Asian Junior meet in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from June 9-12.

Shahidatun hopes to redeem herself in her other pet event – the long jump – tomorrow. She has set her mind on bettering her personal best of 6.11m.

“I can’t decide whether to compete in Barcelona as it clashes with the Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Pahang but there is still time,” said the lanky Shahidatun.

“I’m still young, so I still have a chance to compete in the next World Junior Championships if I skip the Barcelona edition this year.

“As for now, I need to focus on my other pet event. I’m confident of getting it right on Thursday.”
