PETALING JAYA: Teenager Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah , still fresh from his Moto2 debut, got off to a positive start in Round 8 of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships when he set the fastest time in the timed practice session of the CP130 category at Stadium Hang Jebat in Malacca yesterday.
The Petronas Syntium Moto Yamaha Raceline rider set the benchmark with a time of 49.624. Mohd Ramdan Mohd Rosli (Petronas Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM) was second fastest in 49.829 followed by Global Bike Rock Oil Racing’s Elly Idzlianizar Ilias (49.839).
“I clocked 50.072 in the earlier free practice session and I’m glad to see my laptime getting better,” said the 17-year-old Hafizh.
“My team’s engineers made some changes to the engine after the free practice and it enabled me to set a more competitive laptime.
“We may still make some minor changes before today’s Superpole as all the other riders have very competitive lap times.
“My ultimate objective, though, is to set the fastest time during the Superpole in order to grab pole position for the race,” added Hafizh who is hoping to repeat last year’s winning feat in Malacca.
In the CP115 category, Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali (Harian Metro TEQ SCK Honda Racing) was fastest with a time of 51.072, followed by Mohd Farid Ahmad (Global Bike Rock Oil Racing) and Mohd Azhar Abdul Jalil of Motul Yamaha YY Pang Racing.
“So far, everything has gone well for me and I’m happy with my results and my bike’s performance,” said the 17-year-old Fitri who is currently 10th in the overall standings with 39 points.
