KUALA LUMPUR: The national senior team have agreed to release two players to the Project 2013 squad taking part in the Sultan of Johor Cup next month.
The duo are Tenaga Nasional’s Faiz Helmy and Amir Farid.
Two other Project players in the training squad have been retained in the senior team and look set to be included for the Champions Challenge I, which will be held in Johannesburg later next month.
They are Faisal Saari, the top scorer in the recently concluded Malaysia Hockey League (MHL), and Mohd Firhan Azhaari.
National coach Tai Beng Hai said they were not able to release all four players as Faisal and Firhan had establish themselves and were needed in the senior team.
Both the senior and Project 2013 teams are preparing for major tournaments next year. The senior team have the Olympic qualifiers while the Project squad will compete in the Junior World Cup qualifiers in May.
The Champions Challenge I offers ranking points as Malaysia seek to move up from the 15th spot in the world rankings. This will also allow them to be separated from the big guns in the qualifiers.
For the Project squad this is the first time they will play as a team in an international meet. Teams competing the Sultan of Johor Cup are Australia, India, Pakistan, South Korea and New Zealand.
