PETALING JAYA: Phillipa Yoong earned a timely boost ahead of the Indonesia SEA Games next month after bagging Malaysia’s first-ever gold medal in the Asian Waterski Championships at Putrajaya Lake Club at Precinct 8.

Phillipa, the sister of former Formula 1 racer Alex Yoong, grabbed the gold in the women’s open slalom event with 1,000.00 points ahead of Japan’s Hirosawa Saaya, who finished with 846.15 points.

Another Japanese participant, Kamiya Harue, took the bronze in the field of 11 competitors with 653.85 points.

There was double joy for the Yoong family as Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah, Phillipa’s half sister, took silver in the women’s Open tricks.

Aaliyah thus became the youngest skier at eight years of age to win a medal in the Asian Open category for any event.

Phillipa and Aaliyah will be representing the country at the SEA Games waterski competitions in Palembang next month where they will be making bids to win the gold in their respective disciplines.
