KUALA LUMPUR: Junior World Cupper G. Kavin Kartik is among eight players recalled to the Project 2013 hockey squad.
Defender Kavin, who featured in the Junior World Cup in Johor Baru in 2009, was dropped from the squad in March because of poor form.
However, Project 2013 coach K. Dharmaraj has given the Negri Sembilan’s lad another chance following his good performances in the recent Razak Cup tournament in Malacca.
The others recalled are goalkeeper Benny Anggara Yusuf, defender Ganeisha Tamil Chelvam, midfielders Jagdev Singh and Mohd Redzhwan Jaafar and forwards Dangerous Lee, Mohd Aminuddin Abu and Mohd Hafiz Zainol.
Dharmaraj said that he was particularly impressed with Ganeisha’s form, who played well in defence and also helped Negri to the Division Two title. Ganeisha was the top scorer in Division Two with seven penalty corner goals.
Dharmaraj said that all the eight players would be given a fair crack at proving their worth in the Project 2013 squad.
“I hope they will give their best in training and tournaments,” said Dharmaraj, who has trimmed his training squad from 40 to 26 players.
“I also have five players training with the national senior team.”
They are defender Faiz Helmi Jali, midfielder Mohd Azri Hassan and forwards Mohd Rashid Baharom, Faizal Saari and Mohd Firhan Ashaari.
The Project 2013 squad will report for training on Sunday and will play a Test match against the Japan national team on Aug 11.
Dharmaraj, who is being assisted by K. Gobinathan and Nor Azlan Bakar, said the players would be released to play for their clubs in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) next month.
The Project squad’s next assignment will be the six-nation invitational in Johor Baru from Nov 5-12. The other teams in the fray are India, Pakistan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
The Project 2013 squad will also feature in the Junior Asia Cup in Malacca next May in a bid to qualify for the Finals of the Junior World Cup in 2013.
