Shooter sets national senior and junior records in 50m rifle prone

PETALING JAYA: It was double joy for youngster Mohd Shahril Sahak as he broke both the national senior and junior records in the 50m rifle prone individual events on the second day of the Tun Haniff Trophy at the National Shooting Range in Subang yesterday.

The Johorean accumulated 698.3 points to erase the national mark of 697.8 he set in a local meet at the same venue in March last year.

Perak’s Hisyam Adzha took the silver with a 693.5 total while the bronze went to Armed Forces’ Mohd Said Alavi, who registered 692.8 points.

The 20-year-old Shahril’s total score of 595 points in the preliminary rounds of the SportExcel-NSC-Milo-NSAM Championships also helped him to break his own national junior 50m rifle prone individual record.

He improved last year’s record by one point.

Pahang’s duo of Nur Rahimin Abdul Halim (589) and Mohd Hassanul Adzhar (587) won the silver and bronze respectively.

Shahril, who competed in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last October, said that all his hard work in training had paid off handsomely.

“It’s the best achievement of my career. I was in top form today as I shot the perfect score (100) twice in six series,” said Shahril whose other scores were 99, 99, 99 and 98.

“I am delighted with my performance and will be training harder to win my first medal in the Indonesia SEA Games.

“I am currently the number one shooter in the 50m rifle prone but I will only be really happy if I can win a medal in the SEA Games,” said Shahril.

Hafiz Adzha of Perak upstaged Olympian Hasli Izwan Amir Hassan by winning the gold in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event.

Youngster Hafiz accumulated 578 points while Hasli could only manage 569 points.

Khalel Abdullah of Armed Forces took the bronze with a 556 total.
