Malaysia’s Gavin maintains top spot at the halfway mark

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Gavin Green held on to his opening day lead with a brilliant four-under 68 in the second round of the Kurnia-Saujana Amateur Championship yesterday.

Australia’s Ryan Peake is breathing down his neck at only one stroke adrift after a similar 68 at the Palm Course of Saujana Golf and Country Club.

Both Gavin and Peake had five birdies against one bogey on their cards.

“I hit 13 greens today and made many putts from 10 to 12 feet, including a 20-footer for par at the last hole,” said Gavin.

“I was hitting solid and my approaches were closer to the pins. Despite the soggy conditions, the greens were rolling nicely.”

Peake had a few poor drives but managed to recover each time.

“I did not make any stupid mistakes today although I felt like I left a lot of shots out there through poor putting,” he said.

“I missed a couple of putts from less than 14 inches through carelessness.”
