PETALING JAYA: Guangzhou Asian Games gold medallist Alex Liew proved that he is still the man to beat when he took the singles gold medal in the Astro inter-state bowling championships at the Sunway Megalanes in Sunway Pyramid yesterday.
The 35-year-old Selangor bowler fired lines of 212-226-263-202-206-206 for a 1,315 total to win the event.
“It is a great way to start the year after having some quiet time after the Asian Games,” said Alex whose last international outing after the Guangzhou Games was the Euro-Med Storm International Masters in the Philippines last month where he finished eighth.
“I hope this win will mark the start of another good year for me.”
Federal Territory’s Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan, who finished third in the recent Brunswick Euro Challenge in France, took second spot on 1,266 ahead of Sarawakian Aris Ardila Santosoh, who knocked down 1,263 pins.
In the women’s competition, Sarawak’s Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore emerged triumphant after amassing 1,249 pinfalls ahead of Perak’s Sin Li Jane (1,233) and Pahang’s Jerusha Chan (1,231).
Jacqueline, who was also at the Brunswick Euro Challenge, was surprised to clinch victory as she was still missing some sleep.
“I am actually surprised to have done well after having just returned from France last night (Tuesday). I just had three hours of sleep,” she said.
Meanwhile, in the Peter Yap’s Memorial Cup held on Tuesday, 13-year-old Christopher Tiong from Sarawak dominated with a four-game score of 845.
Selangor’s Muhammad Nur Hazarizq and Ahmad Nabil took second and third spots on 815 and 813 respectively.
In the girls’ competition, Selangor’s Nurain Izzati won after amassing 783 pins ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Siti Zulaika (727) and Ayra Nur Jehan (698).
The Memorial Cup event has seen many winners go on to become national players, among them Zulmazran Zulkifli, who won the inaugural championships in 1997, and Adrian Ang, the winner in 1998 and 2001.
