Shuttlers Soon Hock-Fairuzizuan in semis despite fatigue

KUALA TERENGGANU: Not even the lack of sleep could prevent doubles shuttler Ong Soon Hock from notching a win with partner Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari in the men’s doubles competition on the opening day of the the National Circuit Grand Prix Finals at Stadium Negri here yesterday.

Soon Hock, who just tied the knot with former national gymnast Yap Yee Yin in Klang on Thursday, took the first plane out to Kuala Terengganu yesterday morning with Fairuzizuan.

That, however, did not stop them from getting the better of junior pair Nelson Heg Wei Kiat-Teo Ee Yi 23-21, 21-16 in Group B.

Soon Hock and Fairuzizuan said they left the wedding ceremony at about 4am.

“We managed to catch some sleep before boarding the flight to Kuala Terengganu at 7am,” said Soon Hock.

“It was just crazy. I even felt dizzy early into the second game but I managed to hang on and finish off the game.”

In the first game, Nelson-Ee Yi held an 11-6 lead before Soon Hock-Fairuzizuan fought back gallantly to force deuce and win 23-21.

“After feeling light-headed going into the second game, I knew it was important not to let the game go into a third game,” said Soon Hock.

“I was afraid they could nick a game from us. Although I was confident we could have won even if it had gone into a rubber game, I was afraid it would take a toll on us in the coming days.”

Fairuzizuan, who accompanied his partner Soon Hock to pick up the bride in Sekinchan, Selangor, on Wednesday, was relieved to finish off the junior pair in straight game.

“I’m going to get some shut eye before our next game ... just to get some rest.

“It has been a hectic few days for me and Soon Hock, but we are okay,” said Fairuzizuan.

Soon Hock-Fairuzizuan managed to stay awake long enough to see of Yew Hong Kheng-Pang Zheng Lin 21-15, 21-19 in their second group match and book a place in the last four.

Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong also notched up two wins in Group B, defeating Zheng Lin-Hong Kheng 21-16, 21-18 and Nelson-Ee Yi 21-14, 21-15.
