KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed national road cycling coach Graham Seers is not leaving it to chance in the Asian Cycling Championships in Korat from Feb 9-19.
The Aussie has named Amir Mustafa Rusli, Mohd Adiq Hussainie Othman, Mohd Rauf Nur Misbah and Anuar Manan to carry the challenge in the 160km road race.
Ng Yong Li will compete in the 40km individual time trial event.
“I think we have covered the bases with the selection of the riders. Adiq and Amir are able climbers and we have a sprinter who can fight with the rest to the finish line,” said Seers.
He said Yong Li could also replace any of the team members for the road race, depending on his recovery after the time trial event.
For the record, Yong Li finished a creditable sixth in the time trial in last year’s championships.
The team, however, were a disappointment as Anuar could only finish 15th spot after a nine-man breakaway early in the race caught everyone by surprise.
Seers, who was coaching the India national team then, said the majority of riders were caught by surprise.
“A kilometre after the starting point, riders had to make a sharp U-turn and the bottleneck allowed the nine riders to make a breakaway,” he said.
“Strong crosswinds throughout the race also prevented riders from catching up with the leading pack.”
Seers, who was appointed on Jan 1, said he was unable to study the route this year due to limited time.
“I was only told by the organisers that the route will be flat, with some hills, that’s all. ” he said.
