PETALING JAYA: Golf fans are in for a treat in the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic at the Mines Resort and Golf Club from Oct 28-31 as American Heath Slocum (pic) will be making an appearance in a star-studded tournament.
Slocum, fresh from winning the McGladrey Classic at St Simons Island on Sunday, looks to be in top form for the inaugural PGA event in Malaysia.
Since joining the PGA Tour in 2001, he has picked up three Tour wins, including The Barclays last year where he denied Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker to claim victory.
Yesterday, the organisers announced the top 25 available players from the FedEx Cup standings who will play in the Classic.
In addition to Slocum, the championship will also see the addition of two other top finishers from the McGladrey Classic, Robert Allenby and Bill Haas.
Other players to watch include Els, who will be inducted into the World of Golf Hall of Fame in 2011, and Europe Ryder Cup player Luke Donald, who is currently eighth in the Official World Golf Ranking and finished No. 3 in the PGA Tour’s FedExCup.
Donald, with seven top 10s throughout this season and a third place in the FedExCup points ranking, has recorded 10 runner-up finishes after 198 starts.
Others confirmed participatiing in the US$6mil Classic include favourites like Retief Goosen, Robert Allenby, Adam Scott, Ryan Moore and Tim Clark.
South African Goosen, who has made 17 cuts out of 18 events played this season, will be battling it out with countrymen Els and Clark for the US$1mil winner’s purse.
The top 10 players from the current Asian Tour Order of Merit and five players under sponsor exemptions will join them to complete a 40-player line-up. The tournament will be played over four rounds with no halfway cut.
