KUALA LUMPUR: Sapura have joined the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia golf tournament as one of their main sponsors.
The Classic is the first tournament in South-East Asia to be sanctioned by the PGA Tour and it will be held at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Seri Kembangan from Oct 28-31. It offers a total prize money of US$6mil.
Sapura president and chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Shamsuddin in announcing their sponsorship yesterday said: “We are pleased to be part of an event which provides opportunities for those within the region and ultimately puts Malaysia on the international golf map.”
The competition will feature a field of 40 players competing for the US$1mil top prize.
The top 25 players from the PGA Tour based on the final Fedex Cup standing qualify for the tournament along with the top 10 players from the Asian Tour Order of Merit. Five others will play under sponsors’ exemptions.
Shahril added that prior to the tournament, the Sapura Group would organise a competition, a dinner and golf clinics to raise funds for the less privileged.
“We are still working on it and the exact date for these events have not been finalised yet. The competition will be a pro-am,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony yesterday were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, executive chairman PGA Promotions, Tan Sri Hashim Mohd Ali and Sapura Secured Technologies’ Wan Shaharuddin Mahmood.
