SELANGOR, powered by two internationals Mohd Azzam Azmi and Daniel Iskandar Richard, are expected to bag the first gold medal of the Malaysia Games (Sukma).
It should come from the men’s artistic gymnastics team event at the Dewan Politeknik Merlimau in Jasin today.
However, due to a lack of judges the results will only be available at 10pm today.
Teh Kin Kin, the men’s artistic gymnastics chief technical delegate, said that the earliest results are expected to be announced about 10pm.
“Ten states will compete in the team event and we don’t have enough judges. And it will be really difficult to get the results early,” said Kin Kin after the team managers’ meeting yesterday.
Selangor team manager James Ng said he is optimistic that his state will win the first gold in the Games with the presence of Azzam and Daniel.
“The duo will inspire other team members to give their best,” said James.
“Our gymnasts are well prepared as they have been training since last year under three state coaches (Liu Hong Lu, Ng Shu Mun and Illy Illiana Azmi). And I believe that they have the ability to win the artistic team gold,” said James.
Besides Azzam and Daniel, the other members of the Selangor men’s team are Raja Firdaus Raja Aziz, Choo Yinn Haur, Tan Fu Jie and G. Subhan Sadarshan.
James said that winning the first gold in the Games would definitely be a big morale boost for Selangor.
“However, in the artistic team event we are expected to face a strong challenge from the Pahang team as they have some good gymnasts too,” said James.
Surprisingly, hosts Malacca have not entered a team for the team event. Besides Selangor and Pahang, the other states taking part are the Federal Territories, Penang, Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Sabah and Kedah.
Selangor also have a strong women’s artistic team led by three internationals – Chan Sau Wah, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi and Nur Ali Ellina Azmi.
The other members of the women’s team are Letitia Ng Wei Qui, Chim Ai Wei and Nur Atiqah Rosnan.
