PETALING JAYA: The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters from Aug 4-7 this year will be a full field Asian Tour tournament with a total purse of RM1.2mil.
The event to be held at the Seri Selangor Golf Club makes a return to the Asian Tour calendar for the third successive year, reinforcing its objectives to unearth champions and creating new stars.
Worldwide Holdings, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary are the title sponsors and a plethora of Asian Tour stars are expected to converge for the event.
Local stars Danny Chia, Iain Steel, Shaaban Hussin and Ben Leong, who bagged
his maiden Asian Tour title after beating Thai star Thongchai Jaidee in the 2008 edition, will spearhead the Malaysian charge.
Four local juniors will earn a chance to rub shoulders with the stars from the Asian Tour as the top four finishers at the Etiqa Selangor International
Junior Masters held earlier will qualify for the Selangor Masters.
To further cultivate interest among the juniors, golf clinics will also be held during the tournament for promising Selangor amateurs.
Selangor government state secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud expressed the state government’s support for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“The Selangor Masters has been a huge success for the last two years and it has received tremendous exposure both locally and internationally through the extensive Asian Tour media and television platform.
“The tournament has grown immensely since joining the Asian Tour in 2008 and we believe it will continue to grow and further promote the sport and tourism sector in our state and country,” said Ramli, adding that it would be a significant affair as Worldwide Holdings celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han believes the Selangor Masters will continue to unearth new talents and champions as it did in the previous two years.
“We have seen many young winners in previous years like Malaysia’s very own Ben Leong and defending champion Rick Kulacz of Australia.
“The Selangor Masters is an ideal platform for the rising stars to showcase and harness their talent and skills,” said Hla Han.
“I expect our leading players to feature prominently in this tournament as
Malaysia is one of the favorite destinations on the Asian Tour.
“There are a lot of potential golfers in Malaysia and it is through tournaments such as this that will create greater interest among the younger generation to pursue their ambitions as a professional golfer,” added Hla Han.
