PETALING JAYA: Defending champion Mohd Azhar Abdul Jalil has paid the price for aggression and he is not about to do it again in Round 4 of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships in Sepang from June 12-13.
The Motul Yamaha YY Pang rider was disqualified from the Wira final race in the previous round in Batu Kawan after he was found guilty of throwing elbows with Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali of Caviaga Cilik Racing in an attempt to secure the lead after the lights turned green. The scuffle ended with Fitri crashing out at the first turn.
The 17-year old Azhar was fined RM300 and he was warned by the race stewards of a two-round suspension if found guilty of such actions again.
Neither Azhar nor Fitri picked up points in the third round and they lost the lead in the championship standings to Mohd Syawalludin Mohd Zaki of Modenas FortyOne Racing.
Syawalludin has 49 points while Azhar and Fitri are tied in second place on 41 followed by Amirul Hafiq Mohd Azmi (MOS Yamaha Racing) on 33.
Azhar is looking at making amends in Sepang.
“I have learnt my lesson and lost the opportunity to extend my lead in the standings. Now I have to work extra hard to snatch the lead back from Syawalludin,” he said.
“The point difference among the top four riders is very close and I have to win in Sepang to boost my chances to retain the title.
“I know that Fitri and Amirul, who also did not collect any points in the previous round, have the same target to win as well.
“My entire family members and relatives from Klang and also my friends will be in Sepang to lend me moral support.
“Their presence will definitely encourage and motivate me to strive harder. I do not want to let them down and I hope I will take the chequered flag.”
