LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP): Dubai has dropped out of hosting the 2013 World Swimming Championships.
Swimming's governing body FINA said Saturday it had agreed with officials in Dubai not to proceed with the project, and will look for a new venue.
FINA said Dubai wanted to focus on developing swimming at grass-roots level rather than stage a second world event inside three years.
Dubai will remain as host of the short-course world championships, scheduled for December.
FINA chose Dubai last year to host the 2013 worlds ahead of competing bids from Moscow and Hamburg.
The biennial event is being held in Shanghai, China, in 2011.
