PETALING JAYA: Despite his inexperience Amirul Hafiq Mohd Azmi dares to set high targets in his debut season in the Wira category of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships.
The 14-year-old has set his sights on the chequered flag in the third round of the championships in Batu Kawan this weekend.
“Batu Kawan will be my fourth outing in the Cub Prix. My first was in the final round last year at the Esplanade in Penang,” said the MOS Yamaha rider.
“I do not have as much experience as the others, who started out in either the Honda icon Challenge or Yamaha 135LC Challenge.
“But I don’t fear anyone. I want to win in Batu Kawan. I was fourth in the season-opening round in Alor Setar and was second in Kluang. I believe that setting the target to win a race is not an unrealistic one for me.”
Hafiq is in joint third spot in the standings on 33 points with Mohd Syawalludin Mohd Zaki of Modenas Forty One. Defending champion Mohd Azhar Abdul Jalil (Motul Yamaha YY Pang) and Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali (Caviaga Cilik) are the joint leaders on 41 points.
Hafiq gets training and guidance in his racing career from his father, Mohd Azmi Yaacob, who was involved in motorcycle racing in the 1990s.
“I strongly believe champions are made and I see the potential in Hafiq,” said Mohd Azmi.
“When he was only five, I bought him a pocket bike. I registered his name for competitions a year later and he participated in 20 to 30 races each year.
“Hafiq is now racing full season for MOS Yamaha and I hope he will keep up his good run in the coming rounds.”
