PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Lee Chong Wei, squash player Nicol David and cyclist Mohd Azizul Hasni Awang lead a stellar cast of top performing Malaysian athletes for the 2009 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100Plus Excellence Award.

The trio are among the top six nominees shortlisted by SAM ahead of the grand award ceremony, which will be held at the Petaling Jaya Hilton on Feb 20. The winner of the award will receive RM10,000.

The other nominees are swimmer Daniel Bego, divers Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee and the women’s badminton team who won the SEA Games gold medal in Vientiane last December.

SAM president Ahmad Khawari Isa said that this year’s event was made possible following the collaboration with 100Plus and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“We are also pleased to announce that the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, has accepted our invitation to grace the event,” he said yesterday.

There will also be awards for the media offering a total of RM40,000 in prize money. There will be seven categories and the winner of the overall award will receive RM7,000.

The national corporate affairs manager of F&N Beverages marketing Sdn Bhd, Datuk Kamal Harun, said that they would also present a special award for an “Outdo Yourself” category.

“It is an award for an athlete or team who had put in a Herculean effort to excel,” he said.
