SEPANG: The FIFA World Cup trophy is in town again.

The authentic gold trophy arrived together with the global FIFA team on a special chartered flight at the KLIA here yesterday.

And fans can view the iconic trophy, which will be put on display at the Mid Valley Convention Centre tomorrow (10am-10pm). In addition to viewing the trophy, they will also be treated to a screening of a 3D movie.

FIFA media representative Liu Lingling said that Kuala Lumpur was the fifth stop of a global tour to 83 nations across five continents.

“The FIFA World Cup trophy is a global icon and the tour will excite and inspire even more fans by bringing them closer to the greatest prize in football,” she said before unveiling the trophy to the media.

The tour is sponsored by Coca-Cola ahead of the World Cup Finals in South Africa from June 11-July 11. The trophy was also displayed here four years ago before the Finals in Germany.

Lingling said that the tour began from the FIFA headquarters in Zurich last September and will travel around the world before arriving in South Africa on May 4.

The trophy has thus far made stops in Calcutta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Jakarta. The stop after KL is New Caledonia.

The World Cup trophy measures 36.8cm in height and weighs 6.175kg and is made of 18-carat gold with a base of semi-precious malachite. The base of the trophy bears the name and year of the winners since 1974.

Regional manager of Coca-Cola Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Antonio Del Rosario, said that the trophy was rarely seen in public and the tour is a tribute to the sport that breaks down social, cultural and national barriers.

“Without doubt there is a universal passion for football and Coca-Cola are pleased to be able to bring this feeling of unity to Malaysians in the spirit of 1Malaysia,” he said.

Entrance to view the trophy at Mid Valley is by special passes, which can be obtained with the purchase of a McDonald’s Prosperity Burger Meal in restaurants in the Klang Valley.

Fans can also visit the Coke booth at the east atrium of Mid Valley Megamall from today to purchase 2x1.5L bottles and get a chance to spin a wheel to win passes.
