KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be represented by their gold and silver medallists at the Laos SEA Games in the fourth Asian indoor athletics championships in Teheran from Feb 24-26.
Malaysia won six golds and six silvers in the Games in Vientiane last month but Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) deputy president Karim Ibrahim said that not all the medal winners would get to compete in the championships because of the limited number of events.
He added that among the events not in the programme are the 400m hurdles, 4x400m, hammer, shot putt and the walk.
The Malaysian gold medallists at the Laos Games were Mohd Zafril Zuslaini (400m), Noraseela Khalid (400m hurdles), Teoh Boon Lim (20km walk), Loo Kum Zee (high jump), Tan Song Hwa (hammer) and Roslinda Samsu (pole vault).
The silver medallists were Mohd Robani Hassan (110m hurdles), Mohd Jironi Riduan (800m, 1,500m), K. Ganthimathi (800m), Adi Aliffudin (shot putt) and the men’s 4x400m team.
Karim added that six of the medal winners – Zafril, Hup Wei, Roslinda, Robani, Mohd Jironi and Ganthimathi – would make the trip to Teheran.
Another 110m hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian, who clocked a personal best of 13.95 last year, may also get a place in the team.
Karim said that Rayzam, who skipped the Laos Games because of hamstring injury, would have to get the clearance to compete from the doctor.
Meanwhile, Karim said that the MAAU would host the fifth SEA junior championships for the first time at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 26-27.
The championships also provide the opportunities for athletes to qualify for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from Aug 17-23.
Karim also said that Malaysia would host the Asean schools championships at the National Stadium from July 12-16.
