PETALING JAYA: Low Wee Nee opened her British Junior Open squash campaign in style when she needed only 17 minutes to defeat England’s Lucy Townley on Saturday.
The fifth-eighth seed won 11-7, 11-8, 11-2 in the first round of the girls’ Under-19 competition to set up a match against Millie Thomlinson of England in the second round.
It was smooth sailing too for Celine Yeap in the girls’ Under-15 competition. She defeated Alyssa Mehta of Canada 11-5, 11-1, 11-9 in 18 minutes.
However, the unseeded Celine is expected to face a stiffer challenge against Laila Omar of Egypt in the second round.
Two other Malaysian girls in the Under-15 competition received first-round byes. G. Vanessa Raj will start her campaign against Marion Andriamifidy of France in the second round while Yong Sue Ann will face Anna Kimberley of England.
In the girls’ Under-17, Tan Yan Xin also received a first-round bye and she will open her campaign against Chloe Pearson of England in the second round.
Recently crowned Scottish Junior Open Under-13 champion Zoe Foo started her British Open girls’ Under-13 campaign well when she defeated Megan Kaye of England 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 in 17 minutes to set up a match against Laura Gamblin of France in the second round.
In the boys’ Under-17 competition, Affeeq Ismail received a walkover from South Korea’s Sang-Hong-lee. However, Affeeq lost to Islam Adel of Egypt 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 3-11 in the second round.
Compatriot Muhd Addeen Bahtiar was a first-round casualty after going down fighting to Tyler Olson of Canada 6-11, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11 in 39 minutes.
In the boys’ Under-15 competition, Vincent Tan secured a 11-8, 11-1, 11-6 first round victory over Tiago Goriely of Belgium before losing 11-3, 11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 9-11 to Naoki Hayashi of Japan in the second round.
Vincent’s younger brother Nicholas, received a first-round bye in the boys’ Under-13 competition and he will play against Lucas Rousselet of France in the second round.
