Vatanen pledges new-look FIA if elected

ARI Vatanen made clear on Thursday that he is planning for a more democratic, transparent and leaner International Motorsports Federa-tion (FIA) if he wins next month’s election to replace current president Max Mosley.

The former world rally champion is standing against Frenchman Jean Todt, the former F1 boss of Ferrari, who outlined his goals in an earlier letter to FIA members. Vatanen unveiled his objectives in a manifesto sent to the presidents of member clubs.

Vatanen praised the work done by the FIA in safety in recent years and pointed out how important it was to develop motor sport in countries where the sport is still relatively new and developing.

But he added: “We need the transparency with which we govern the sport and establish the rules. In order to achieve this, we must ensure that the entire justice system of the FIA is above any doubts regarding its independence.

“To be more effective in our government of the sport, we will actively seek for ways to make the organisational structure leaner and establish a more hands-on approach where possible.” — AFP
