Gavin and Ainil keep their cool to claim golf crowns

PETALING JAYA: Overnight leaders Gavin Kyle Green and Ainil Johani Bakar clinched the men’s and women’s titles in the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Golf Challenge 2009 at the Kelab Golf Negara Subang here yesterday.

Gavin carded an even-par 71 yesterday for a three-day total of 210 to win by four strokes.

“I had three birdies but a bogey on the 14th and a double bogey on the 17th took my score to level par,” said Gavin.

Kenneth Christian De Silva and Mohd Iylia Jamil Mohd shared second spot while defending champion Akhmal Tarmizee Mohd Nazari was fourth on 216, ahead of Nicholas Fung (217).

Nineteen-year-old Ainil blew up with a four-over 75 yesterday but it was still enough to win her third straight title on two-over 213 – four shots ahead of second-placed Kelly Tan.

“I am not happy with my 75 today as I was hoping for a grand finish. I lost concentration midway through but managed to regain my composure and focus,” she said.

Isza Fariza Ismail (223) finished third, followed by Michelle Koh Lay Sia (216).

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presented Gavin and Ainil with RM40,000 and RM20,000 golf grants, which will allow them to enrol in a foreign golfing academy.
