PETALING JAYA: Defending champion Ainil Johani Bakar took the lead on the first day of the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Golf Challenge 2009 at Kelab Golf Negara Subang yesterday, but the spotlight was on Nurul Shahirah Afiqah (pic) after making a hole-in-one on the 13th.
The 16-year-old Form Four student from Sandakan couldn’t believe her eyes after the ball dropped into the hole.
“My heart was beating so fast. I quickly pinched my face to check whether I was dreaming and then began to jump and scream,” she said.
Nurul, however, only managed to finish the day with a seven-over 78.
Ainil returned a one-over 72 for a one-stroke lead over Tan Min Yean and Isza Fariza Ismail. Another stroke adrift is Kelly Tan followed by Ardilla Ali Rahman on 75.
In the boys’ competition, Kenneth Christian De Silva and Nicholas Fung shared the lead on par 71. One stroke behind in joint third place are Adrian Teo and Farhan Syarif Yasin followed by Gavin Kyle Green on 73.
The tournament is organised by TSM Charity Golf to unearth young talent with a total of 54 boys and 30 girls competing to win an overseas golf scholarship valued at RM40,000 for boys and RM20,000 for girls.
The brainchild of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the tournament ends tomorrow.
