KUANTAN: Kuala Lumpur’s Elaine Tan claimed five gold medals in the national schools (MSSM) rhythmic gymnastics championships, which ended at the Berjaya Megamall here yesterday.
The national gymnast showed that she was shaping up well for Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Malacca next year by winning the individual all-around, rope, clubs, ribbons and team events.
Team-mate Lio Fui Zhe, however, prevented her from making a clean sweep of titles in the Under-18 category by winning the ball gold medal.
In the Open category, Elaine had to play the bridesmaid to seasoned campaigner Wan Siti Haniza Wan Izhar, finishing second in all five individual events.
There were also competitions in other age-groups (Under-12 and Under-15) in the five-day championships.
The MSSM technical chairman, Petrina Low, was happy with the standard of the gymnasts in the championships and she made special mention of Pahang’s Chan Zhi Hui.
“She is only 12-years-old but showed a lot of potential. She did not win any medal but she has what it takes to be a star in the future,” said Petrina.
“Zhi Hui is being coached by our former national gymnast See Hui Yee. It is good to see former gymnast contributing to the country.”
