GEORGE TOWN: Kedah broke into the top four of the Super League for the first time this season after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Pahang at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar last night.
Fadly Baharom opened accounts for the reigning champions after 11 minutes. Midfielder Shahrulnizam Mustapha doubled the home side’s lead in the 28th minute after beating Pahang goalkeeper Mohd Remezey Che Ros in a one-on-one situation.
But the home fans were stunned in the 38th minute when the Elephants reduced the deficit against the run of play.
Pahang midfielder Shahrizan Salleh was allowed too much time to unleash a left-footed long-range strike which caught Kedah goalkeeper Mohd Helmi Eliza by surprise.
National player Khyril Muhymeen restored the Canaries’ two-goal lead just three minutes later when he latched onto a Fadly corner and scored with a stunning shot on the turn.
The win allowed the Canaries to leapfrog over Negri Sembilan into fourth spot, and draw level on 25 points with second-placed Selangor and third-placed Kelantan.
Perlis lead the standings with 28 points, and like Selangor, have played a game less than Kedah.
Meanwhile, Johor FC downed basement side Police 4-0 at the JCorp Stadium in Pasir Gudang. Skipper Wan Rohaimi Ismail (36th), Saiful Sabtu (45th) and Nurul Azwan Roya (81st, 88th) got on the scoresheet for the southerners.
The Kedah-Pahang and Johor FC-Police fixtures were brought forward from Saturday to allow both home teams more time to prepare for their AFC Cup matches next Tuesday.
