Irina dies of cancer


KUALA LUMPUR: Former national rhythmic gymnastics coach Irina Gabashvili, who led Malaysia to their first-ever gold at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, passed away on Tuesday due to cancer. She was 48.

The former rhythmic world champion from Republic of Georgia had spent seven years coaching the Malaysian team and her efforts paid off when the quartet of Thye Chee Kiat, Carolyn Au Yong, El Regina Tajuddin and S. Sarina won the historic gold at the Games.
