SEREMBAN: Defending champions China send an early warning by humiliating Thailand 18-0 in a Group A match of the women’s Junior Asia Cup at the Seremban II Hockey Stadium yesterday.
Malaysia, who lost 1-2 to Japan in the opening match on Saturday because of defensive errors, will play against China today.
National coach Yahya Atan said that he never expected China to chalk up such a big margin win over the Thais.
“We (the national team) will face a torrid time against the skilful Chinese,’’ said Yahya. Our defenders will have to play a tight-marking game. Any defensive error will be costly.”
India started their Group B campaign with a thumping 8-0 win over Singapore. The scorers for India were Yendala Soundarya (10th, 52nd), Anuradha Devi Thookohom (18th, 47th), Vandana Katariya (27th, 39th), Joydeep Kaur (21st) and Ritu Rani Tindal (58th).
In another Group B match, South Korea chalked up an easy 7-0 win over Taiwan.
Group A: Thailand 0 China 18, Pakistan 0 Japan 17.
Group B: Singapore 0 India 8, S. Korea 7 Taiwan 0.
4pm: Singapore vs Taiwan.
6pm: Malaysia vs China.
