BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) _ Gareth Barry scored just before halftime and Aston Villa held on to beat four-time European champion Ajax 2-1 in their opening UEFA Cup group match on Thursday.
Villa, which won the European Cup in 1982, conceded an equalizer to Thomas Vermaelen before Barry collected a 45th-minute cross just inside the area and placed a low, left-foot shot past goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer.
