Red Devils retain Community Shield in penalty shoot-out

WEMBLEY: Manchester United beat Portsmouth yesterday to win English football's season-opening Community Shield in a penalty shoot-out for the second straight season.

Portsmouth had forced a 0-0 draw against the Premier League champions but missed their first penalty kick, had their third saved by Edwin Van Der Sar – who stopped three kicks in this match last season against Chelsea – and lost the shootout 3-1 when Glen Johnson lofted the fourth high into the crowd.
