TENERO (Switzerland): Lukas Podolski, Germany’s top-scorer at Euro 2008, is an injury doubt for tomorrow’s quarter-final clash against Portugal after damaging his calf muscle, it was revealed yesterday.
The 23-year-old, who has scored three goals so far in the tournament, picked up the calf injury in Monday’s 1-0 win over Austria, which put the Germans in the last eight as runners-up to Group B winners Croatia.
“Lukas has a problem with his calf and will not be involved in training today (Tuesday) and we are hoping it will be right for the Portugal match,” said Loew.
“We will, of course, be doing everything we can to get him back on the pitch, but there is a large question mark on his participation.”
Poland-born Podolski scored both goals in Germany’s opening group stage 2-0 win over Poland and then grabbed the consolation in his team’s 2-1 shock defeat by Croatia last week.
The Bayern Munich striker has played out of position so far in an attacking midfielder role, but Loew is set to name him alongside Miroslav Klose against Portugal as Mario Gomez has so far failed to impress at Euro 2008.
Loew admitted VfB Stuttgart striker Gomez – who was named Germany’s Player of the Year in 2007 – has not been up to scratch so far in the tournament.
“He has not been playing to the same level as we saw him achieve last season,” said Loew.
“But I am sure we will see his qualities later in the tournament.” – AFP
