Lewandowski bent on facing Austria

WARSAW: Polish midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski said he’ll face co-hosts Austria at Euro 2008 even with a cast on his ankle, the daily Dziennik reported        yesterday.

The recently-injured footballer missed a training session on Monday but is expected to play in today’s Group B game against        co- hosts Austria.

The team’s doctor were due to make the final decision later last night, but told Dziennik that Lewandowski’s health is improving by the hour, and if that               continues he’ll be ready for the match with Austria.

Michal Listkiewicz, head of the Polish football federation (PZPN), told Dziennik he was sure Lewandowski would be ready.

“I asked Mariusz if he’ll be able to play on Thursday. He assured me he’ll take the field, even if he had to put on a cast,” Listkiewicz said. – dpa
