KUALA LUMPUR: Malacca will host for the first time an international invitational beach soccer tournament from Oct 13 to 19 at the Klebang beach.
Eight teams from South America, Europe and Asia, including one from Malaysia, are expected to participate in the one-week tournament.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said in a statement yesterday that the tournament would enable the development and promotion of the state as a key sports-tourism destination.
“I am sure this tournament would turn out to be a major sporting event for this year and become the top tourist attraction here,” he said and added that a temporary stadium will be built specifically for the tournament.
He said Malacca would be the starting point for the development of beach soccer in the country as this would be an added impetus for the growth of the sport in Malaysia. – Bernama
