Leaders drop points against Negri

SEREMBAN: Leaders Kedah’s title hopes suffered a dent when they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Negri Sembilan Naza in a Super League match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi last night.

Lamin Conteh was the hero for Negri, heading in the equaliser deep into stoppage time after Marlon James had put Kedah ahead in the 65th minute.

The small group of Kedah fans were busy celebrating, thinking their team had grabbed a 10th successive win of the season when Lamin struck from a corner-kick.

Kedah, on 38 points, still top the 13-team standings.

For Negri, it was one of their better performances although they extended their winless streak to six matches since their last win on Jan 29 (against Police 3-2).

It was not an easy outing for the Canaries last night.

Negri had done well to contain the visitors until the 65th minute.

That was when James, the St Vincent and Grenadines striker, broke the hearts of the 5,000 home fans when he floated in a free-kick past the Negri wall and goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Harun.

It was James’ 18th Super League goal and his 21st of the season.

Until then, Negri were doing well, sticking to a solid game plan.

Apart from one good look at goal in the third minute when his volley from outside the box was saved by Mohd Farizal, James hardly had a sniff after that.

The Negri back line, led by skipper Marian Juhas and Mohd Afandy Adimel, did well to shackle the Kedah frontmen – Marlon and Mohd Khyril Muhymeen.

It was Negri who enjoyed possession but their attackers –Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Razak, Effendi Malik, Shahurain Abu Samah and S. Kunalan – were unable to find the target.

To make matters worse for Negri, Kunalan was sent off in the 89th minute for rough play.
