Kedah maintain two-point lead with win over Sarawak

PETALING JAYA: Marlon James fired a brace to steer high-flying Kedah to a narrow 2-1 Super League win over Sarawak at the State Stadium in Kuching last night.

The Canaries, who have 34 points from 11 wins, one draw and three defeats, are two points ahead of Selangor, who beat Brunei DPMM 2-1 at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan.

James, the St Vincent striker, was the toast for Kedah when he struck in the 16th and 20th minutes to give the Canaries an early 2-0 lead.

Sarawak reduced the deficit through Khalid Hamket in the 77th minute.

Marlon had bagged a hat-trick on Tuesday when Kedah hammered PKNS 5-2 in an FA Cup tie.

The red-hot Marlon is the leading goal-getter in the Super League with 14 goals from 14 matches.

In Bandar Seri Begawan, defender Razman Roslan scored the winner for the Red Giants in the 70th minute after Indra Putra Mahayuddin had given them the lead in the second minute.

Mohd Subhi Abdullah equalised for Brunei DPPM in the 15th minute but the home team were down to 10-man three minutes later when former Penang player V. Jaganathan was sent off for dangerous play.

At the Perak Stadium in Ipoh, Perak defeated Police 5-1 to move up from fourth to third spot on 28 points.

The cops opened fire first, with new signing Budi Sudarsono of Indonesia hitting the target in the 31st minute.

But their joy was short-lived as former national skipper Ahmad Shahrul Azahar drew Perak level two minutes later.

Perak’s on-song strike duo – Chile’s Carlos Caceres (38th, 89th) and Khalid Jamlus (64th, 87th) – then took over the show by scoring a brace each.

New Perlis coach Irfan Bakti’s fine three-match winning run came to an end last night when Johor FC beat them 1-0 at the JCorp Stadium. Former Public Bank striker Gustavo Fuentes scored the only goal of the match in the second minute.

In Paroi, Negri Sembilan suffered a setback when they went down 2-3 to Pahang at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium.

Negri lead 2-1 in the first-half with goals from Shahurain Abu Samah (13th) and Udo Fortune (44th) after Pahang had taken the lead through K. Rajan (seventh).

Hairuddin Omar drew Pahang level in the 56th minute before Norhafiz Zamani Misbah scored the winner 10 minutes later.
