PETALING JAYA: Joint Super League leaders – Kedah, Negri Sembilan and Selangor – continued to surge ahead with convincing victories last night.

Kedah ended their jinx at the Perak Stadium when they gunned down 10-man Perak 5-2 while Negri Sembilan beat Penang 2-1 in Paroi. Selangor hammered Police 4-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium.

Terengganu, the other team who were joint leaders prior to last night’s matches, were not in action.

Kedah, Negri and Selangor now lead the way with 16 points each. Kedah are top on goal difference, followed by Selangor and Negri.

The main match last night was the one between Kedah and Perak, who began the day just a point behind the leaders.

And the hero for the Canaries was St Vincent striker Marlon James, who struck a brace in the 59th and 69th minutes.

Until then, both teams were locked at two goals apiece, with Kedah twice coming from behind to draw level.

Former national striker Khalid Jamlus gave Perak a fourth-minute lead only for national midfielder Mohd Khyril Muhymeen to equalise just three minutes later.

Then, when promising youngster Mohd Noor Hasrul restored Perak’s lead in the 15th minute, Badrul Bakhtiar, who set up the first goal, again drew Kedah level in the 18th minute.

The turning point of the game came in the 51st minute with the sacking of Khalid for a two-footed lunge on Nelson Martin.

Two goals by James and a fifth by Hasmawi Hassan (86th) sealed all three points for Kedah.

Over at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium, S. Kunalan put the Deer ahead against Penang in the ninth minute before Lamin Conteh doubled the score from the spot in the 39th minute.

Penang pulled one back through an M. Prakash penalty in the 70th minute but it proved too little too late.

National striker Mohd Safee Sali was the star of the night when he scored a hat-trick in Selangor’s come-from-behind 4-1 win over Police in Shah Alam.

The cops took the lead in the seventh minute through Kenyan striker Hillary Echesa but that only woke up the Red Giants.

And it was Safee who led the way, finding the net in the 14th, 28th and 37th minutes. Akmal Rizal then added the icing to the cake with the fourth in the 85th minute.

In another match, UPB-MyTeam, anchored at the bottom of the 13-team table before last night’s matches, showed plenty of resilience to fight back from two goals down to beat Perlis 4-2 at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya.

It was the first win of the season for MyTeam, pushing them up two places with five points.

Perlis went into the break 2-0 up, thanks to goals by Rudie Ramli (28th minute) and Phillimon Chepita (34th).

MyTeam came back after the breather refreshed and recharged to hit four goals past Perlis. Norsharul Idlan Talaha (50th) reduced the deficit before Zambri Chin (68th, 90th) and Mijo Dadic (73rd) completed the unlikely comeback.
