Football: Kedah trounce Selangor to regain top spot

PENANG: Kedah bounced back on to the winning track with a thumping 6-2 win over Selangor in a Super League match at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Star last night.

On a night when the treble champions were eager to make up for a 1-3 defeat by Terengganu in their previous match on Tuesday, the Canaries struck with venom with St Vincent striker Marlon James scoring a brace in the 34th and 87th minute after Mohd Khyril Muhymeen and Bernard Huggings had given Kedah a 2-0 a lead in the first 20 minute.

Although Selangor, who went into the match as leaders, put up a brave fight with Frank Seator and Ivan Yusoff pulling goals back in the 23rd and 38th minute, they failed to prevent Kedah from scoring two more goals through Badrul Bakhtiar (48th) and Hasmawi Hassan (84th).

The convincing win for Kedah put them back on top of the table on better goal difference than Terengganu and Selangor.

Terengganu defeated Perlis 1-0 with Brazilian Gilesson Sreire scoring the goal in the fifth minute.

Halt: Brunei’s Ashfaq Ali (front) goes airborne after a tackle by M. Prakash of Penangduring their Super League match yesterday. The match ended 1-1.

Kedah, who won the Super League, Malaysia Cup and FA Cup titles last season, charged at the Red Giants' goal from the word go and Mohd Khyril volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Megat Amir Faisal in the 13th minute to put them in front.

Selangor continued to come under pressure and their defence cracked again five minutes later, conceding a goal to St Vincent defender Huggings.

After Seator pulled a goal back for Selangor from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, James restored the two-goal lead for Kedah in the 34th minute.

But Selangor had the last say before the break with Ivan nodding home a P. Gunalan corner kick in the 38th minute.

The Canaries again took control in the second half and Badrul turned home a cross from Mohd Khyril just three minutes into the half.

Hasmawi scored the fifth goal for Kedah in the 84th minute and James completed the rout of Selangor three minutes later.

At the City Stadium, Penang came from behind to force a 1-1 draw against Brunei.

The visitors took the lead with a well-taken header by Mohd Azwan Salleh in the 47th minute and Penang equalised through Mohd Azrul Ahmad in the 72nd minute.
