Football: Kedah coach happy with margin of victory over Police

Hats off: Kedah’s Hasmawi Hassan helped himself to a hat-trick against high-ridingPolice in their Super League match on Tuesday.

PENANG: Kedah hitman Hasmawi Hassan weaved his magic and blasted in a hat-trick to end the fairytale run of newly promoted Police in the Super League.

The former Penang striker's goals gave the Canaries a 4-1 win over newly promoted Police at the Darulaman Stadium on Tuesday.

Coach Mohd Azraai Khor was naturally very happy with the result.

''The margin of victory was one that I had least expect,'' said Mohd Azraai.

''Police were riding high after two straight wins in their Super League debut and with the long break I was preparing for a stormy night.

''As it turned out it was a magical night with Hasmawi getting everything right.”

Hasmawi's hat-trick came almost immediately after Kedah's St Vincent striker Marlon James had successfully prised open the tight Police defence after 27 minutes.

The former national striker delivered his first almost immediately on the restart before helping himself to two others in the 51st and 77th minute to complete the rout.

Police's lone reply came from Kenyan hitman Hillary Echesa in the 88th minute.

''It is always so soothing to see a local player standing out to help deliver in the League. But what can be seen as a bigger relief is the performance of the whole team,'' said Mohd Azraai.

''We have improved tremendously going by our great show last night (Tuesday).

With a job well done on Tuesday night and the fact that their next clash is against Terengganu on Sunday, Mohd Azraai has decided to give his Canaries a two-day break, a gesture which will enable them to celebrate Hari Raya Haji today.
