Azalina: Have special route for invited VVIPs

ALOR STAR: The Youth and Sports Ministry has directed organisers of major sports events to arrange special access route for invited VVIPs to avoid inconveniencing them in case of massive traffic jams.

Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the recent episode where the Sultan of Kedah was forced to walk 2km to the Batu Kawan Stadium should never recur.

“Stadium managements and related associations should plan ahead to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“If organisers know VVIPs such as Sultans, Mentris Besar and executive councillors are coming, they must have special route for them (so that they would not be stuck in jams),” she said after opening the Alor Star Wanita Umno meeting here yesterday.

Azalina was commenting on an incident last Saturday when Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, who was invited to give away prizes during the FA Cup final, had to walk for 45 minutes as his car was caught in a deadlock jam.

Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon will have an audience with the Sultan on Tuesday to personally apologise to him.

Azalina said such incidents would tarnish the image of the organisers.
