MEMPHIS (Tennessee): John Daly's chaotic personal life put golf in the back seat again on Friday, when the player said his wife, Sherrie, had attacked him with a steak knife.
Daly, who showed up for the second round of the St. Jude Championship with angry red cut marks on his face, didn't talk to reporters but released a statement that said he was a “victim of an assault by my wife.”
Daly, a two-time major winner, said he had notified authorities of the incident, which occurred at his home in the area early Friday.
“I filed a complaint with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. They are investigating, and I'll have no further comment on the matter,” Daly's statement said. “My only concern at this point is for the safety of my children and myself.”
Daly, 41, carded a four-over 74 on Friday for a four-over total of 144 and was expected to make the cut, which won't be established until the rain-disrupted round concludes on Saturday morning.
Long a fan favourite for his “grip-it-and-rip-it” playing style, Daly has also made headlines for his battles with drinking and gambling.
He and Sherrie, his fourth wife, had both filed for divorce in October. – AFP
