KUALA LUMPUR: About 80 Kenyan athletes will feature in the Power 10km Run at the Dataran Merdeka here on April 22.
The organisers, Bata Malaysia and the Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA), are expecting another bumper turnout of at least 4,000 runners for a total of nine categories of competition.
Bata Malaysia senior marketing manager Datuk James Selvaraj said that they were glad that the run had drawn a good response from Kenyan athletes.
“The majority of the participants are students and we do have some coming from Thailand and Singapore.
“But this is the first time that Kenyans will compete in the Run,” said James at the launch of the event by the OCM president, Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar, at the Wisma OCM here on Tuesday.
However, James said that he was not sure of the quality of the Kenyans but felt that their presence would provide stiffer competition for the regulars in the Run, which offers a total of RM16,000 in prize money.
The defending champions are M. Arul Thevar and S. Devamani in the men's and women's Open categories respectively.
The other categories of competition are men's junior veteran (40-49), men's senior veteran (above 50), women's veteran (35 above), boys' and girls' junior (16-17), secondary school boys and girls (13-15).
Also present at the launch were the managing director of Bata (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Eugenio Olabe, and the FTAAA president, Tan Sri Mohd Amin Osman.
Entry forms can be obtained from the FTAAA office at Wisma OCM.
The closing date for entries is April 16. For further details call 03-27152843.
