KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) has only just begun but it has run into problems. Two Division One matches – one in Tampin and the other at the Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) were called off yesterday because of water problems.

The match between defending league champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and SMK Tengku Besar at the Tampin Hockey Stadium was called off because of insufficient water.

And there was no water at all at the BPSS Hockey Stadium for the home team's match against SMK Datuk Taha.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said that there was no enough water in the tank to wet the turf in Tampin.

“The pitch was too dry and dangerous for play. The technical officials called the fire brigade to water the turf. When they did not arrive after waiting for 30 minutes, the technical officials decided to call off the match,” he said.

“We have wasted our time making the trip to Tampin. I hope that the competitions committee will reschedule the match to be played at our venue at the Tun Razak Stadium in KL.”

The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary, Hashim Mohd Yusoff, said that the competitions committee would meet soon to decide on the dates and venue for the two matches called off yesterday.

Only one Division One match was played yesterday. And former champions Tenaga Nasional, who defeated Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak) 2-0 on Friday, drew 0-0 draw against Anderson of Ipoh at the Manjung Hockey Stadium.

Tenaga coach K. Rajan said that his forward-line, led by two national junior trainees R. Nadesh and Mohd Nor Zakhwan Shahran, was a big letdown in the match.

“They created so many chances but just could not get it right. My boys also found it hard to dribble on the bumpy pitch. We have lost two valuables points and this could affect our chances to win the league title,'' he said.

Rajan added that their key defender, Kamarul Adzhar Nordin, suffered an injury on his left index finger in the match.

“He was hit on the finger during a tackle and we are not sure how bad is the injury,” he said.
