KUALA LUMPUR: Defending league champions Bukit Jalil Sports Schools (BJSS) got off to a great start in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) by whipping BJSS Juniors 10-2 in a Division One match at the Tun Razak Stadium yesterday.

In another Division One match, Tenaga Nasional defeated Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak) 2-0 at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium here.

Tenaga had to stave off a strong challenge from the much improved Olak side before scoring through national junior trainee Mohd Nor Zakhwan Shaharan off their first penalty corner in the eight minute.

And six minutes from time, another national junior trainee R. Nadesh, the captain, scored from the top D to give Tenaga the hard fought victory.

Olak, the former double champions, played well with some good moves from forward Amanjit Singh but was unlucky not to score.

Tenaga coach K. Rajan said his boys were rusty yesterday because of a lack of friendly matches before the start of the league.

“We could not get any teams to play any friendly matches because the KL Stadium was fully booked during the national Under-16 tournament last week.

“However, I hope my boys’ confidence will be boosted by the victory over Olak and play much better against Anderson tomorrow in Manjung,” said Rajan.

Olak assistant team manager Philip Andrew De Silva said his players played well but missed a number of chances.

“Besides that, we played without three regulars who were involved in the Klang Inter-school competition (yesterday).”

Meanwhile, Mohd Faisal Kamaruddin was the toast for BJSS by scoring the first hat-trick in the league – in the 30th, 43rd and 47th minutes.

Mohd Izzat Mohd Rahim (13th, 16th), Mohd Hilmi Hafidz Mohd Haidir (20th, 63rd) and Mohd Ifzul Hayat (28th, 42nd) each scored a brace. Mohd Syafiq Ahmad netted the other goal in the 68th minute.

Mohd Izad Hakimi (52nd) and Mohd Hafiz Idrus (56th) replied for BJSS Juniors.

Last year’s Division Two champions, SMK Tengku Besar also got off to a winning start by defeating another Negri Sembilan school, SMK Datuk Taha 4-1 at the Tengku Besar Stadium in Tampin yesterday.

Mohd Shafiq Yaacob scored a brace for Tengku Besar in the 25th and 68th minutes. Norazlan Abdul Ghani (14th) and Shazrul Ekhmar Abdul Razak (29th) scored the other goals.

Mohd Aliflammim Abdul Latif scored Datuk Taha’s sole effort in the ninth minute.
