PETALING JAYA: It was not a happy Chinese New Year for national women’s number two squash player Sharon Wee.

Sharon was hoping to boost her world rankings by competing in the Mayfair Lakeshore Squash Open in Toronto, which started last Friday.

Unfortunately, Sharon’s plans were disrupted when she was stranded for 35 hours at the JFK Airport in New York.

Flights were cancelled because of snowstorms.

When she finally arrived in Toronto on Friday, the Malaysian world number 18 found herself without her luggage, racquets and shoes.

Nicole Pirko, the tournament’s organising head, helped out Sharon, who was seeded second in the competition but she was beaten in the first round by local player Alana Millier.

Sharon lost 5-9, 8-10, 6-9.
