PETALING JAYA: The National Sports Council (NSC) are delighted with the Higher Education Ministrys (HEM) initiative to offer more scholarships to sportsmen and women.
The HEM made the announcement about the scholarships on Thursday.
NSC deputy director general Datuk Zolkples Embong said that if there are issues arising from the first batch of recipients they are confident that these could be ironed out in consultation with MASUM (the governors of university sports) or even NSC who can assist in giving the relevant information.
Comparisons should not be made between the HEM scholarships and the scholarships given to elite athletes under NSC. They are different things, said Zolklpes.
Firstly, the scholarships for the elite athletes are already in place. In fact, we welcome more scholarships for athletes.
Secondly, although in terms of monetary value, the HEM scholarships are more attractive, the scholarships given by the Youth and Sports Ministry have other benefits. These include prolonging the duration of their courses and deferring their dates of examinations. These cannot be equated with monetary rewards.
To qualify for the HEM scholarship, athletes have to meet certain conditions.
The recipients have to attain CGPA of 2.50 and above. If they fail to do so for two consecutive semesters, the scholarships would be withdrawn and the students would have to reimburse the money spent on them.
Any scholarships given by the government will compete with those given by the NSC. They will complement each other, said Zolkples.
