PETALING JAYA: The overwhelming support from the fans for the national team’s AFF Championship semi-final first-leg match against Singapore at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday came as a pleasant surprise for the FA of Malaysia (FAM).
FAM general secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad said that they hoped to see continued support from the fans to help in their bid to raise the standard of the national team.
“It was a bumper crowd and totally unexpected. We really appreciate the support shown and we would like to say a big thank you,” said Ibrahim, who hoped that the fans would give the same support to the national age-group sides as well.
Malaysia are now ranked 157th in the FIFA rankings.
The match on Tuesday drew 50,000 fans and it was one of the biggest turnouts for a match played by the national team in recent years. The Shah Alam Stadium has a capacity for 90,000 fans.
National coach Norizan Bakar was also touched by the support showed by the fans.
“Normally, they would have started leaving the stadium before the final whistle. But this time they were behind the team all the way till the end. The team certainly appreciate this sort of encouragement.”
