Water polo player collapses by poolside

CHINA water polo player Han Zhidong was taken to hospital after collapsing by the poolside during his team’s Asian Games clash yesterday.

Zhidong, who scored a hat-trick in China’s 16-13 win, had just left the water when he collapsed on the team bench. He was quickly stretchered to an ambulance and taken to the athletes’ village medical centre after the incident, which occurred with the game tied 10-10.

The 29-year-old’s condition was not immediately known.

Zhidong has spent the last three years playing in Australia, winning league titles with Sydney University Lions in 2005 and Fremantle Mariners in 2006. – AFP
