Simulation competition helps team stay on their toes

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian bowling team are leaving no stones unturned in their preparation for the Doha Asian Games.

Yesterday, the men's team of Alex Liew, Daniel Lim, Azidi Ameran, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Aaron Kong, Ben Heng together with the women bowlers – Wendy Chai, Shalin Zulkifli, Choy Poh Lai, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, Esther Cheah and Sharon Koh – went through a simulation team competition at Endah Parade in Sri Petaling here.

They were seen shouting and psyching each other up.

Said men's skipper Alex Liew: “We just wanted to create the atmosphere. In fact, it was also a good opportunity for us to put into practice what we have learned during training. Our team hardly missed the spares today.”

Chief coach Holloway Cheah said that the simulation exercise was beneficial.

“We brought in the bowlers from Gemilang (back-up) squad to challenge the Asiad teams. It took us more than three hours to complete three games on the short oil,” he said.

“The exercise helped the bowlers to stay focused. It is easy to get distracted in the team event because it takes a long time for a bowler to get his or her turn to bowl.

“And it can be physically and mentally demanding for a bowler to stay there for three hours and bowl consistently well.”

Besides concentrating in all aspects of training, the equipment of the bowlers had also been given great attention.

“Every bowler will be taking 10 balls to Doha. Only six balls can be registered. The bowlers will then decide on their five strike and one spare balls based on the condition of the alley after the official practice sessions,” said Holloway.

The well-being of the bowlers had not been neglected too.

Besides keeping them in shape through physical fitness programme and proper diet, all the 12 bowlers had been taken to the dental clinic.

“We are leaving no stones unturned. We want our bowlers to be in good condition during the Games,” said team manager Cheah Ban Cheang.

Team unity too is vital for the bowlers' success in the Games.

And yesterday, the bowlers continued to show the team camaraderie when they joined together to celebrate Zulmazran's 23rd birthday at the alley.
